The Earnhardt name to racing is like the Kennedy name to politics --- iconic. There was a time when it looked like the Earnhardt name would vanish from NASCAR tracks, until Jeffrey Earnhardt  earned a ride. I was the first reporter he spoke with after the announcement that he would be on the track in 2018, and he opened up about keeping the Earnhardt name in NASCAR.

I oversaw the development of nearly five-dozen phone and tablet applications for the 17 news properties in CMG. I selected the vendors, negotiated the contracts, navigated the various application store rules and ensured products were delivered in a timely manner. I followed market trends to advise the properties on digital issues and oversaw special projects as assigned. My title was “Senior Manager of Strategic Initiatives” from 2009 to 2011.

In this dual role I had responsibilities for Cox Media Group, and Cox Media Group Digital. For Ohio, I devised and implemented digital strategy for all of Cox Ohio’s 14 web sites, including solutions for content sharing among radio, television and newspapers; analyzed products that could be used across all media; and created a plan to further cement our leadership in local breaking news. For Cox Media Group’s digital division, I wrote digital reader strategy (e-readers, tablets, etc) and negotiated deals with e-reader and tablet manufacturers to for Cox content.

Internet General Manager, Cox Ohio Publishing
March 2006 to January 2010:
Duties included overseeing the Cox Ohio internet business, including new business, strategic planning, vendor relations and technical development. Accomplishments:
  1. Revenue nearly doubled between 2006 and 2008
  2. Audience increased more than 50% year-over-year
  3. Ohio was the only major metro in the Cox chain to post a profit in its digital operations  
  4. Redesigned the main e-paper site and drew national acclaim for ease of use
  5. Technological innovations were an industry-wide leader and garnered national awards.
 
Deputy Managing Editor, Dayton Daily News:
2003 to 2006:
I oversaw the metro, sports and online staffs, coordinated daily story budgets, and ran the newsroom in the absence of the Managing Editor. Among online achievements:

  1. Merged ActiveDayton.com and DaytonDailyNews.com staffs, resulting in personnel efficiencies
  2. Increased DaytonDailyNews.com's page views from 5.8 to 8.3 million a month.
  3. Pioneered the use of audio and video on the site.
  4. Established vendor relationships that built online audience and revenue. Entered into vendor contracts with Whatifsports.com for simulated sports games and UDPride.com for University of Dayton sports content
  5. Directly oversaw and edited national-leading coverage of the Ohio State University men’s basketball scandal that resulted in the head coach’s dismissal.
 
Other Positions held at Cox Ohio Publishing
Assistant Managing Editor/production. Supervised the copy desk, art, and photo departments. While AME I turned around the desk’s deadline performance. I was also in charge of editorial’s training and development program.
Regional Editor: Supervised bureaus in Warren, Miami and Greene counties. Responsible for all aspects of bureau operations, from story production to ensuring the bureaus came in on budget. Also oversaw an award-winning Education team.
Metro Editor: Supervised government, dayside and nightside courts and cops teams. The government team included our Columbus, Ohio and Washington, D.C. bureaus. I was also responsible for the local offerings on the daily budget. I made sure budget lines were up-to-date and that we followed stories and produced solid enterprise off the news. Edited the book Back In Orbit, which commemorated John Glenn’s return to space.
Sports Editor: Supervised the sports department reporters, copy desk and clerks.
Deputy Sports Editor: My duties included driving news-related projects and daily enterprise reporting into the section; assigning and editing stories; making late-night deadline decisions on where stories should be played; balancing the largest travel budget in editorial.
Assistant Metro Editor: Supervised the work of three nightside reporters, the medical reporter and one nightside editorial assistant. Assigned and edited stories; assigned stories for the weekly health and fitness page. I did the initial planning and created the concept for the page.
Reporter: My beats included minority affairs, social services and health and medicine.
